Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of HBOT as an adjunctive therapy for patients with mutilated hand injuries.
  • To assess the impact of HBOT on tissue survival and functional restoration in severe hand trauma.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 45 patients with mutilated hand injuries were enrolled between 2006 and 2014.
  • Patients received HBOT (120 minutes at 2.5 ATA) after reconstruction or revascularization, with an average of 9.1 sessions.
  • Outcomes including amputee survival and surgery-related complications were recorded.

Main Results:

  • The survival rate for replanted fingers was 81%, and for palms, it was 100%.
  • Early HBOT intervention, combined with microsurgery, was effective in preserving partially viable tissue.
  • Most complications in the initial phase involved flap loss, while chronic complications included scar contracture.

Conclusions:

  • Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in preserving tissue and restoring function in mutilated hand injuries.
