Medical students show normal cardiorespiratory function but elevated risk factors. Participation in regular exercise is recommended to improve their lifestyle and prevent potential health issues.
Area of Science:
- Sports Medicine
- Physiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Medical students' anthropometrical characteristics, motor abilities, and cardiorespiratory functions are crucial for overall health.
- Sedentary lifestyles among students can lead to increased health risks.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess anthropometrical characteristics, motor abilities, and cardiorespiratory functions in medical students.
- To identify potential health risks and lifestyle factors affecting student well-being.
Main Methods:
- Eighty-seven medical students were categorized into five groups: recreational, basketball players, handball players, male, and female first-year students.
- Measurements included anthropometrical data (BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage), motor performance tests, and cardiorespiratory function assessments (blood pressure, heart rate, vital capacity).
Main Results:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio were at the upper limit of normal, with body fat percentages similar to sedentary individuals.
- Basketball and handball players demonstrated superior motor performances compared to other groups.
- Most students had normal resting blood pressure and heart rate, but six exhibited cardiovascular risk factors (systolic blood pressure > 140 mm Hg).
Conclusions:
- Medical students generally possess adequate cardiorespiratory function and vital capacity.
- A need exists to promote preventative lifestyles and encourage regular physical activity among medical students to mitigate health risks.
