Summary

Remote cognitive assessments are feasible for multiple sclerosis (MS) research. This study found MS patients would participate, identifying factors influencing participation and cognitive differences between MS cases and controls.

Background:

  • Cognitive impairment is prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS), impacting employment and quality of life.
  • There is a need for large-scale studies to identify risk factors for cognitive decline in MS.
  • A validated remote cognitive function assessment for MS does not currently exist.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of remote cognitive studies in MS patients.
  • To identify factors influencing participation rates in remote cognitive assessments.
  • To explore the relationship between MS risk factors and cognitive function scores.

Main Methods:

  • The Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS-M) was administered to MS cases and controls.
  • Linear and logistic regression models were used to analyze participation rates and cognitive scores.
  • Factors influencing participation and associations with TICS-M scores were investigated.

  • 11.5% of eligible participants refused cognitive testing; MS cases, females, and those with lower education were more likely to refuse.
  • More severe MS disease, smoking, and being male were associated with lower TICS-M scores among cases.
  • MS cases demonstrated significantly lower TICS-M scores compared to controls.

  • Remotely administered cognitive assessments are feasible for large-scale epidemiological studies in MS.
  • This study establishes a foundation for future research using validated cognitive measures in MS.
  • Remote assessments can facilitate the identification of cognitive decline risk factors in MS populations.
