  • To compare respiratory function between renal transplant recipients and healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of 99 participants (68 renal transplant recipients, 31 healthy controls).
  • Assessment of forced vital capacity (pulmonary function tests), respiratory muscle strength (maximal static inspiratory and expiratory pressures), and peripheral muscle strength (hand grip strength).
  • Recording of nutritional parameters, including serum albumin and C-reactive protein levels.

Main Results:

  • Renal transplant recipients showed significant relationships between forced vital capacity, maximal respiratory pressures, and hand grip strength.
  • Positive correlations were observed between serum albumin levels and both hand grip strength and forced vital capacity.
  • While forced vital capacity differed significantly between groups, maximal respiratory pressures did not; biochemical markers showed no significant relation to maximal respiratory pressures.

Conclusions:

  • Peripheral muscle strength and respiratory function are significantly interconnected in renal transplant recipients.
  • Reduced peripheral muscle strength suggests potential inadequacy in respiratory function.
  • Peripheral and respiratory muscle training, alongside nutritional interventions, may enhance postoperative respiratory function.
