Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

3.2K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

SBAR I: Understanding the Concept

6.2K
Effective communication among healthcare professionals during hand-off reporting is essential to delivering safe and continuous patient care. Common professional interactions include reports to healthcare team members, hand-off, and transfer reports. Nurses routinely report information to other healthcare team members and also urgently contact healthcare providers to report changes in patient status.
Standardized methods of communication have been developed to ensure that information is...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

4.2K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Summary

Standardized bedside attending rounds (AR) improved patient satisfaction and the feeling of being cared for. This patient-centered model also reduced rounding time, benefiting both patients and healthcare teams.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Patient Experience
  • Clinical Operations

Background:

  • Attending rounds (AR) are crucial for patient care coordination and trainee education in academic medical centers.
  • However, patient involvement in these rounds is inconsistent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a standardized bedside attending rounds (AR) protocol on patient satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 1200 patients at a 500-bed urban hospital.
  • The intervention group received training on 5 standardized AR practices, while the control group followed usual practices.
  • Patient satisfaction, perceived and actual duration, and team satisfaction were measured.

Main Results:

  • Patients in the intervention arm reported significantly higher satisfaction with attending rounds (AR) (4.49 vs 4.25; P=0.01).
  • Patients also felt more cared for by their medical team in the intervention group (4.54 vs 4.36; P=0.03).
  • The standardized approach reduced AR duration by 8 minutes on average, though trainees reported lower satisfaction.

Conclusions:

  • Implementing a standardized, patient-centered attending rounds (AR) model enhances patient satisfaction and perceived care.
  • This model is time-efficient and can be adopted by medical teams.
  • Further research may explore trainee and attending satisfaction in standardized models.
