European research on low dose radiation risk is being reorganized through the Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Research Initiative (MELODI). This platform aims to update strategic research agendas and improve health risk estimates for radiation protection.
Area of Science:
- Radiation Protection Science
- Low Dose Radiation Effects
- European Research Policy
Background:
- Declining resources and expertise in radiation protection research across Europe necessitated a coordinated approach.
- A High Level and Expert Group (HLEG) was formed in 2007 to identify key research questions and policy needs.
- The HLEG's work led to the establishment of the Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Research Initiative (MELODI).
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide an update and summary on the organization of European research in low dose radiation risk and protection.
- To address challenges in radiation protection research by establishing a strategic research agenda.
- To guide national and European research programs and funding calls.
Main Methods:
- Establishment of the Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Research Initiative (MELODI) as a research platform.
- Formation of a registered association for MELODI, expanding membership significantly since 2010.
- Development and continuous updating of a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for low dose radiation research.
Main Results:
- The MELODI platform has grown to include 46 members as of September 2016.
- A comprehensive Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) has been established to direct research priorities.
- Focus on improving health risk estimates for occupational and public exposures.
Conclusions:
- The MELODI initiative is central to organizing European research on low dose ionizing radiation risk.
- The SRA guides research priorities and funding, aiming to enhance radiation protection standards.
- Key objectives include refining risk assessments for regulatory compliance and emergency preparedness.
