Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Photopolymerization Technology

Background:

  • Composite restorations require adequate light penetration for proper curing.
  • Light diffusion in composite resins can be limited by filler properties.
  • Optimizing light transmission is key to ensuring the longevity and efficacy of dental restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of spherical glass mega fillers (SGMFs) on light diffusion in composite restorations.
  • To determine if SGMFs can positively influence light penetration within dental composites.
  • To assess the effectiveness of SGMFs in enhancing photopolymerization of composite materials.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty composite samples were prepared with varying configurations of SGMFs (0.1.5mm and 0.2mm layers).
  • Samples were subjected to transillumination, and light intensity was measured using digital image analysis software.
  • Curing times were standardized for composite layers, with transillumination applied through the first layer.

Main Results:

  • Single layers of SGMFs increased light intensity by 24.37%–33.33% (lateral view) and 53.66%–79.58% (front view).
  • Two layers of SGMFs resulted in significantly higher light intensity increases: 66.4%–67.99% (lateral view) and 267.53%–319.63% (front view).
  • The results indicate a dose-dependent and configuration-dependent enhancement of light diffusion with SGMFs.

Conclusions:

  • Spherical glass mega fillers (SGMFs) effectively facilitate light diffusion in light-curing composite resins.
  • SGMFs show potential for improving the depth of cure and overall quality of composite restorations.
  • The incorporation of SGMFs represents a promising strategy for enhancing the photopolymerization efficiency of dental composites.
