Multiple sclerosis patients treated with interferon-beta showed higher IFNAR1 gene expression. This finding highlights the role of IFNAR1 in the disease, particularly in females aged 30-40.
Area of Science:
- Neuroimmunology
- Genetics
Background:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, inflammatory, and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
- The specific role of certain genes, such as IFNAR1, in MS initiation requires further investigation in diverse populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the function of the IFNAR1 gene in the Iranian population.
- To compare IFNAR1 gene expression levels between relapsing-remitting MS (RR-MS) patients and healthy individuals.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative RT-PCR was used to measure IFNAR1 gene expression levels.
- Whole blood RNA was extracted from 50 RR-MS patients and 50 healthy controls.
- Patient cohort included HLA-DRB1*15 negative individuals responding to interferon-beta with normal vitamin D levels.
Main Results:
- RR-MS patients exhibited significantly higher IFNAR1 gene expression compared to controls (p=0.012).
- Females aged 30-40 showed a significant increase in IFNAR1 expression (p=0.046).
- Males under 30 demonstrated a significant decrease in IFNAR1 expression (p=0.04).
- Female patients, specifically, showed a statistically significant increase in IFNAR1 expression (p=0.004).
Conclusions:
- IFNAR1 levels are elevated in MS patients treated with interferon-beta.
- The study suggests a potential role for IFNAR1 in the pathogenesis or treatment response of MS.
