Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Ergonomics
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a significant concern in occupational health.
  • Evaluating exposure to risk factors and redesigning workplaces are key strategies for WMSD prevention.
  • Existing methods for assessing ergonomic risk factors can be time-consuming or require specialized equipment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce K2RULA, a semi-automatic software for Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA).
  • To enable real-time and off-line detection of awkward postures using Microsoft Kinect v2.
  • To validate the accuracy and reliability of K2RULA in ergonomic assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Development of K2RULA software utilizing Microsoft Kinect v2 depth camera technology.
  • Validation experiment 1: Comparison of K2RULA scores against a reference optical motion capture system.
  • Validation experiment 2: Agreement assessment between K2RULA scores and a RULA expert rater, including comparison with Kinect v1-based software.

Main Results:

  • K2RULA demonstrated a statistically perfect agreement with the optical motion capture system (proportion agreement index = 0.97, k = 0.87).
  • K2RULA showed statistically perfect agreement with a RULA expert rater (proportion agreement index = 0.96, k = 0.84).
  • K2RULA outperformed commercial software based on Kinect v1, which had lower agreement (proportion agreement index = 0.82, k = 0.34).

Conclusions:

  • K2RULA is a reliable and accurate tool for semi-automatic RULA evaluation.
  • The software effectively detects awkward postures for ergonomic risk assessment in real-time and off-line analysis.
  • K2RULA offers a promising, validated solution for improving workplace safety and preventing musculoskeletal disorders.
