Summary

Polyprenyl immunostimulant (PI) effectively reduced feline rhinotracheitis severity in a clinical trial. This veterinary biologic is safe for cats, offering a new treatment option for this common respiratory and ocular disease.

Background:

  • Feline rhinotracheitis, caused by feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1), is a widespread and contagious disease.
  • Clinical signs include respiratory and ocular conditions, often seen in multi-cat environments, even in vaccinated individuals.
  • No licensed treatment was previously available for FHV-1 infection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of polyprenyl immunostimulant (PI) in treating feline rhinotracheitis.
  • To determine if PI can reduce the severity of respiratory and/or ocular symptoms associated with FHV-1 infection.

Main Methods:

  • Double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials were conducted.
  • Experimentally infected cats received either PI or a placebo daily, starting on the day of FHV-1 challenge.
  • Disease severity was assessed daily for 14 days using a standardized scoring system by masked observers.

Main Results:

  • Cats treated with PI demonstrated significantly lower disease severity scores compared to the placebo group (p=0.05).
  • Safety studies, including a large field safety trial with 390 cats, confirmed PI's safety.
