Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Area of Science:

  • Rehabilitation research
  • Disability studies
  • Vocational psychology

Background:

  • Media-based rehabilitation offers potential for examining vocational behaviors in the disability sector.
  • Employment instability is a significant issue for working-age adults with multiple sclerosis (MS), influenced by various factors.
  • Existing research in this area is preliminary, necessitating pilot data collection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report pilot data on the effectiveness of an email-delivered, resource-based package called Work and MS.
  • To assess the impact of the Work and MS intervention on vocational self-efficacy and identity in adults with MS.
  • To examine changes in life orientation and depressed mood as secondary outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen adults with MS participated in the study.
  • Participants received the email-delivered Work and MS package.
  • Vocational self-efficacy, identity, life orientation, and depressed mood were assessed pre- and post-intervention using validated scales. Wilcoxon signed ranks tests and effect sizes were used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive effects were observed for vocational self-efficacy, identity, and optimism.
  • Approximately 30% of participants showed reliable change in at least one key outcome.
  • Participants reported satisfaction with the intervention's content and delivery.

Conclusions:

  • The Work and MS program shows preliminary evidence of promoting vocational goals and strengths in job seekers with disabilities.
  • The intervention is an innovative and feasible option for enhancing engagement with vocational services and potentially improving outcomes.
  • The study suggests potential applicability of the Work and MS program to other disability groups and indicates a need for replication with a randomized controlled design.
