Bonanno's Theory of Grieving01:17

Bonanno's Theory of Grieving

1.2K
Grieving is a complex psychological and emotional process that varies significantly among individuals. George Bonanno's research on bereavement identified four distinct patterns of grieving, offering a nuanced understanding of how people cope with significant loss, such as the death of a spouse, over extended periods. These patterns — resilience, recovery, chronic dysfunction, and delayed grief — highlight the diversity in emotional responses and adaptive mechanisms.

Ending Relationships01:28

Ending Relationships

229
The dissolution of intimate relationships presents complex emotional and psychological challenges, particularly when emotional bonds are strong, the relationship is long-standing, and perceived alternatives are limited. This distress often intensifies in romantic breakups, where the initiator may experience greater turmoil than the rejected partner. Contributing factors include residual attachment, guilt over causing pain, and uncertainty about how to manage the situation. The stress is further...

Assumptions of Survival Analysis01:15

Assumptions of Survival Analysis

472
Survival models analyze the time until one or more events occur, such as death in biological organisms or failure in mechanical systems. These models are widely used across fields like medicine, biology, engineering, and public health to study time-to-event phenomena. To ensure accurate results, survival analysis relies on key assumptions and careful study design.

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

807
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Kaplan-Meier Approach01:24

Kaplan-Meier Approach

674
The Kaplan-Meier estimator is a non-parametric method used to estimate the survival function from time-to-event data. In medical research, it is frequently employed to measure the proportion of patients surviving for a certain period after treatment. This estimator is fundamental in analyzing time-to-event data, making it indispensable in clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and reliability engineering. By estimating survival probabilities, researchers can evaluate treatment effectiveness,...

Kubler Ross's Stages of Dying

1.6K
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross significantly advanced psychology's understanding of the process of dying with her influential book, On Death and Dying (1969). She focused on studying terminally ill individuals and outlined five stages commonly experienced when coping with death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
In denial, individuals reject the reality of their condition, often thinking, "This isn't true; I feel fine," as a way to protect themselves from...

Summary

Older adults face increased mortality risk following the death of a cohabiting partner. This heightened risk is most significant in the initial three months post-bereavement.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Mixed evidence exists regarding the adverse outcomes for older adults after spousal or partner bereavement.
  • Accounting for confounding factors is a significant challenge in bereavement research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between a patient's death and the timing of cohabitee bereavement.
  • To assess the impact of partner loss on mortality risk in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • A self-controlled case series study design was employed, utilizing the Health Improvement Network (THIN) primary care database.
  • The study included patients aged 50-99 years who died between 2003 and 2014.
  • Household identifiers were used to determine the presence of an opposite-sex cohabitee at the study's outset.

Main Results:

  • The study analyzed 38,773 men and 23,396 women who had a cohabitee.
  • A significantly elevated risk of death was observed in the 24 months following a cohabitee's death compared to unexposed periods.
  • The highest risk of mortality occurred within the first three months post-bereavement, with incidence rate ratios of 1.63 for men and 1.70 for women.

Conclusions:

  • Bereavement of a cohabiting partner significantly increases mortality risk in both men and women, particularly in the first three months.
  • Further research is needed to evaluate interventions aimed at mitigating this increased mortality risk.
