  • Lung function abnormalities can be indicative of systemic health issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between abnormal lung function and CKD indicators in Korean adults.
  • To examine the modifying effect of metabolic syndrome on the association between lung function and CKD indicators.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 8551 Korean adults (≥40 years) from the 2011-2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
  • Defined lung function categories (obstructive lung disease [OLD], restrictive lung disease [RLD]) and CKD indicators (albuminuria, low estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]).
  • Performed gender-specific logistic regression analyses, adjusting for various lifestyle and demographic factors.

Main Results:

  • Low eGFR showed increased odds for RLD in men and RLD/OLD in women without MetS.
  • In individuals with MetS, low eGFR was linked to higher odds of OLD in men and RLD/OLD in women.
  • Albuminuria was associated with higher odds for RLD in men without MetS, and RLD/OLD in men and women with MetS.

Conclusions:

  • Abnormal lung function is associated with increased odds of CKD indicators, particularly when metabolic syndrome is present.
  • Even without MetS, RLD in men and RLD/OLD in women are linked to higher odds of CKD indicators.
  • These findings highlight the interconnectedness of lung health, kidney function, and metabolic status.
