Venous Thrombosis III: Interprofessional Care

428
Venous thrombosis requires effective prevention and treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce potential complications.Prevention StrategiesHealthcare providers must prioritize preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) for all adult patients upon admission. Interventions depend on bleeding and thrombosis risk, medical history, current medications, diagnoses, planned procedures, and patient preferences. Patients on bed rest should change positions every two hours and, if not...

Summary

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare complication after cranioplasty surgery. Prompt administration of cryoprecipitate coagulum can effectively manage excessive bleeding in these cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure to repair skull defects.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare but serious complication following surgery.

Observation:

  • A patient developed excessive postoperative bleeding after cranioplasty for cranial trauma.
  • Initial treatments with blood transfusions were insufficient; DIC was suspected due to prolonged PT/APTT, thrombocytopenia, and elevated D-dimer.
  • The bleeding resolved after administering cryoprecipitate coagulum.

Findings:

  • This case highlights a rare instance of DIC post-cranioplasty.
  • Cryoprecipitate coagulum administration was crucial in controlling postoperative hemorrhage.

Implications:

  • Early recognition and treatment of DIC with cryoprecipitate may be vital for patients undergoing cranioplasty.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering DIC in unexplained bleeding after skull reconstruction.
