Ketamine, a glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, shows rapid antidepressant effects, driving research into new glutamate-signalling modulators for major depressive disorder (MDD). Further studies are needed to address safety, efficacy, and mechanisms for these novel depression treatments.
