Summary

Comparing herpes simplex virus typing methods, immunofluorescence assay showed differences between types 1 and 2. However, some antiviral drug-resistant mutants may be misidentified using this approach.

  • To compare the efficacy of different methods for typing herpes simplex virus clinical isolates.
  • To evaluate the reliability of immunofluorescence assay and restriction endonuclease analysis in differentiating HSV-1 and HSV-2.
  • To assess the impact of antiviral drug resistance on viral typing.

  • Immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using type-specific antibodies was performed on 111 clinical isolates and 7 resistant mutants.
