Summary

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) frequently causes neurological diseases affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems. Research is ongoing to determine if antiretroviral drugs can treat HIV-related brain conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Neurological complications are common in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • These disorders can impact both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
  • HIV-related neurological conditions can be the initial sign of the disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the spectrum of neurological disorders associated with HIV infection.
  • To highlight the increasing recognition of direct HIV infection of the CNS.
  • To discuss the potential for antiretroviral therapy in managing HIV-related brain diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of neurological manifestations in HIV-infected patients.
  • Analysis of reported cases of CNS and PNS disorders in the context of HIV.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Examination of current understanding of HIV neuropathogenesis.
  • Main Results:

    • Opportunistic infections and lymphomas are primary causes of CNS disease in HIV patients.
    • HIV-associated dementia complex (dementia) and encephalopathy in infants are recognized CNS syndromes.
    • Peripheral nervous system disorders, potentially autoimmune, are increasingly identified.

    Conclusions:

    • Neurological disorders are a significant concern in HIV infection, affecting both CNS and PNS.
    • Direct HIV CNS involvement, leading to dementia and encephalopathy, is increasingly recognized.
    • Future research will focus on the efficacy of antiretroviral drugs against HIV-induced brain conditions.
