A short interpregnancy interval (IPI) and a short cervix are independent risk factors for preterm birth. The link between a short IPI and preterm delivery is not explained by cervical shortening.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Reproductive Medicine
- Perinatal Health
Background:
- Interpregnancy interval (IPI) is the time between pregnancies.
- Short interpregnancy intervals are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm delivery.
- The mechanism linking short IPI to preterm delivery is not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate whether cervical shortening mediates the relationship between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and preterm delivery.
- To determine if short cervix is a risk factor for preterm birth in women with short IPI.
Main Methods:
- Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study.
- Included multiparous patients with transvaginal cervical length (CL) measurements at 22-24 weeks.
- Patients were grouped by IPI: ≤1 year (Group 1) and >1 year (Group 2).
- Primary outcome: short cervix (CL < 2.5 cm); Secondary outcome: preterm delivery (<37 weeks).
Main Results:
- No significant difference in the incidence of short cervix between Group 1 (10.0%) and Group 2 (12.9%).
- Short interpregnancy interval (IPI) and short cervix were independently associated with preterm birth in logistic regression analysis.
- The relationship between short IPI and preterm birth was not explained by cervical length.
Conclusions:
- Short interpregnancy interval (IPI) and short cervix are independent risk factors for preterm birth.
- Cervical shortening does not appear to mediate the association between short IPI and preterm delivery.
- Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the association between short IPI and preterm birth.

Prediction Intervals
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.

Pathophysiology of Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Development of Immunocompetence
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...
