A rare case of ectopic thyroid tissue in the retroperitoneum was discovered in an otherwise healthy woman. Laparoscopic surgery successfully removed the mass, highlighting a minimally invasive approach for such exceptional findings.

Background:

Ectopic thyroid tissue, while rare, can occur in various locations outside the thyroid gland.
Retroperitoneal masses require thorough investigation to determine their nature and appropriate management.

Observation:

A 43-year-old woman presented with an incidentally discovered retroperitoneal mass.
Imaging studies (CT, MRI, PET-CT) revealed a well-delineated, heterogeneously enhancing mass.
Laparoscopic resection was performed, yielding a smooth, brownish nodular mass.

Findings:

Histopathological examination confirmed the mass to be solely composed of ectopic thyroid tissue.
The mass measured 40 x 26 x 20 mm and was located in the infradiaphragmatic retroperitoneum.
