Background:

Mediation models are frequently used in nursing research to understand complex relationships between variables.
Evaluating the methodological rigor of these analyses is crucial for advancing evidence-based practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe common approaches nursing researchers use to test mediation models.
To evaluate these approaches in light of current methodological advancements.
To identify areas for improving the rigor of mediation analysis in nursing studies.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of 456 studies published in nursing journals from 2004-2015 that tested mediation models.
Data extraction focused on study design (e.g., correlational, longitudinal) and analysis characteristics (e.g., method, assumptions, sample size).
Descriptive statistics were used to identify general trends in mediation analysis practices.

Main Results:

Nursing researchers' application of mediation analysis often demonstrates a lack of awareness regarding underlying assumptions and limitations.
Commonly used methods may not fully address the complexities of mediation, particularly in longitudinal designs.
There is a need for enhanced understanding and application of advanced mediation testing techniques.
