When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Summary

Interleukin-37 (IL-37), an anti-inflammatory cytokine, is elevated in endometriosis patients. Higher IL-37 levels in peritoneal fluid and serum correlate with disease severity, potentially by inhibiting NFκB activation.

Background:

  • Interleukin-37 (IL-37) is recognized as a novel anti-inflammatory cytokine.
  • Endometriosis is a complex inflammatory gynecological condition.
  • The role of IL-37 in endometriosis pathogenesis remains largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate IL-37 expression in serum and peritoneal fluid of endometriosis patients.
  • To determine the clinical significance and prognostic value of IL-37 in endometriosis.
  • To explore the relationship between IL-37 and NFκB signaling in endometriosis.

Main Methods:

  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serum IL-37 quantification.
  • Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for peritoneal fluid IL-37 and NFκB mRNA.
  • Statistical analysis to correlate IL-37 levels with clinical factors and disease severity.

Main Results:

  • IL-37 levels were significantly higher in serum and peritoneal fluid of endometriosis patients compared to controls (P=0.0005).
  • Peritoneal fluid exhibited higher IL-37 concentrations than serum in endometriosis patients (P<0.0001).
  • A significant inverse correlation was found between IL-37 mRNA and NFκB mRNA expression in peritoneal fluid, suggesting IL-37 dampens NFκB activation.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated IL-37 in serum and peritoneal fluid is a potential biomarker for endometriosis.
  • IL-37 expression correlates with endometriosis severity and may play a protective role by inhibiting NFκB.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the therapeutic potential of IL-37 in endometriosis management.
