Aromatic Compounds: Overview

15.1K
In general, the term ‘aromatic’ indicates a pleasant smell or fragrance from fresh flowers, freshly prepared coffee, etc. In the early history of organic chemistry, many benzene derivatives were isolated from the pleasant odor oils of the plants. For example, vanillin was isolated from the oil of vanilla, methyl salicylate from the oil of wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from the oil of cinnamon. They all had a pleasant odor; hence the name aromatic was given.
In 1825, Faraday isolated...

Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry
  • Medicinal Chemistry

Background:

  • Kalimeris indica is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
  • Isolation and characterization of novel compounds from plant sources are crucial for drug discovery.
  • Previous phytochemical investigations of the Kalimeris genus may not be exhaustive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new and known chemical constituents from the herbs of Kalimeris indica.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic potential of the isolated compounds against various cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Phytochemical analysis involving extraction and isolation techniques.
  • Structure elucidation using advanced spectroscopic methods, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry (MS).
  • In vitro cytotoxicity assays against four human cancer cell lines.

Main Results:

  • Two new compounds, a nor-sesquiterpene (kalimeristone A) and a nor-triterpenoid (kalimerislactone B), were identified.
  • Eight known compounds, including isoflavones, lignans, and phenolic aldehydes, were also isolated.
  • None of the isolated compounds exhibited significant cytotoxic activity in the evaluated cancer cell lines.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified novel chemical entities from Kalimeris indica.
  • The isolated compounds from this genus represent new chemical discoveries.
  • The evaluated compounds did not demonstrate in vitro anticancer potential, suggesting further research may be needed for other biological activities or structural modifications.
