Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

13.6K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

2.7K
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.

Summary

Psoriasis that did not respond to treatment (recalcitrant psoriasis) in a young woman resolved after a tonsillectomy. This suggests a link between throat infections and severe psoriasis.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis can trigger or exacerbate psoriasis in some individuals.

Observation:

  • A 19-year-old woman presented with severe, treatment-resistant psoriasis following streptococcal pharyngitis.

Findings:

  • Multiple conventional treatments failed to improve the patient's psoriasis.
  • Surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) led to significant improvement in psoriasis symptoms.

Implications:

  • Tonsillectomy may be a viable treatment option for select patients with psoriasis linked to streptococcal infections.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the immunologic connection between tonsillar infections and psoriasis pathogenesis.
