Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

Background:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition.
Skeletal health in children and adolescents with ASD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate bone mass and skeletal parameters in pediatric and adolescent males with ASD.
To compare bone outcomes between individuals with and without ASD.

Main Methods:

Study included males aged 5-17 years, some treated with risperidone.
Measurements included anthropometry, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography.
Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to compare skeletal outcomes.

Main Results:

Individuals with ASD exhibited significantly lower trabecular bone mineral density and bone strength at the radius.
A marginally lower total body less head bone mineral content was observed in the ASD group.
No significant differences in bone parameters were found at the lumbar spine.

Conclusions:

Autism spectrum disorder is associated with reduced bone mass and strength in pediatric males.
Findings highlight the need for research into interventions to improve skeletal health in individuals with ASD.
