Bone Cells and Tissue01:30

Bone Cells and Tissue

9.1K
Bones contain a relatively small number of cells entrenched in a matrix of organic and inorganic components. Although bone cells compose only a small amount of the bone volume, they are crucial to its function. Four types of cells are found within the bone tissue— osteoblasts, osteocytes, osteogenic cells, and osteoclasts.
Osteoblasts and Osteocytes
The osteoblast is the bone cell responsible for forming new bone tissue. It is found in the growing portions of bone, including the...

Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling01:31

Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling

4.5K
Osteoclasts are cells responsible for bone resorption and remodeling. They originate from hematopoietic progenitor cells present in the bone marrow. Numerous progenitor cells fuse to form multinucleated cells, each with 10-20 nuclei. A single osteoclast has a diameter of 150 to 200 µM. These cells have ruffled borders that break down the underlying bone tissue and release minerals such as calcium into the blood in bone resorption. Osteoclasts cling to bones with their ruffled edges during...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

4.3K
Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Oral Cavity01:11

Oral Cavity

3.4K
The oral cavity, or the mouth, is a complex structure in humans that plays a vital role in our day-to-day lives. Its role is not only in chewing and swallowing food; it also plays a role in speech and facial expressions.
Teeth: The teeth are the hardest structures in our bodies. Humans have two sets of teeth throughout their lifetime: deciduous (baby) teeth and permanent teeth. Each tooth consists of several parts: the crown (visible part), the root (embedded in the jaw), enamel (hard outer...

Urinary Tract Calculi II: Pathophysiology and Clinical Manifestations

496
Renal calculi, commonly termed kidney stones, are crystalline solid masses that form in the kidneys but can occur at any point within the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The pathophysiology of renal stones involves several key factors: supersaturation of the urine with stone-forming constituents, changes in urine pH, a decrease in urine volume, and the presence of substances that promote or inhibit stone formation.Supersaturation of Urine: This is the...

Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

2.4K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Dentistry

Background:

  • Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) are rare, accounting for 0.3-0.8% of all odontogenic cysts.
  • This report focuses on the diagnosis and management of a COC in a 67-year-old female patient.

Observation:

  • An asymptomatic, well-defined radiolucent lesion was incidentally found on a panoramic X-ray near mandibular teeth 33 and 34.
  • The treatment involved surgical enucleation and curettage of the cyst.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of COC.

Findings:

  • The patient remained asymptomatic with no signs of recurrence at the 6-year follow-up.
  • Radiographic evidence showed new bone formation in the operated area.
  • Pulp vitality tests confirmed the health of the teeth in the affected region.

Implications:

  • Complete enucleation is the recommended treatment for calcifying odontogenic cysts.
  • Long-term radiographic and clinical monitoring ensures the absence of recurrence and preserves dental health.
