Background:

  • Accurate cephalometric landmark identification is crucial for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the reliability of manual versus digital soft tissue landmark plotting on lateral cephalograms.
  • To evaluate landmark identification accuracy in both X and Y axes.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty pretreatment lateral cephalograms were digitized using Dolphin software.
  • Ten soft tissue landmarks were plotted by six observers using both manual and digital methods.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to assess intrarater reliability.

Main Results:

  • Both manual and digital methods demonstrated good reliability, approaching homogeneity in X and Y axes.

Conclusions:

  • Digital plotting provides significant advantages in data management (archiving, retrieval, transmission).
  • The digital method is recommended for both clinical practice and research due to its efficiency and enhanced features.
