Summary

This study provides the first normative data for the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) in a healthy population. Scores generally decrease with age and are lower for those unfit for work or with prior surgery.

Background:

  • The Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) is a validated tool for assessing lower extremity function.
  • Existing LEFS data primarily comes from patient populations with musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Normative data for healthy individuals using the LEFS is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish normative reference data for the LEFS in a healthy population.
  • To investigate demographic and lifestyle factors influencing LEFS scores in healthy adults.

Main Methods:

  • 1,014 healthy hospital visitors and staff completed the LEFS questionnaire.
  • Exclusion criteria included recent or planned lower extremity surgery.
  • Statistical analysis examined the impact of sex, age, employment status, socioeconomic status, and surgical history on LEFS scores.

Main Results:

  • The overall median LEFS score was 77 out of 80.
  • Scores decreased with increasing age and were lower in participants unfit for work.
  • A history of lower extremity surgery was associated with significantly lower LEFS scores.
