Summary

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation effectively reduces acute post-thoracotomy pain. However, this pain management technique did not impact hospitalization duration or early pulmonary complications in the study.

Background:

  • Post-thoracotomy pain is a significant clinical challenge.
  • Existing pain control methods yield conflicting results.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a potential adjunctive therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of TENS for post-thoracotomy pain control.
  • To assess the impact of TENS on early complications following thoracotomy.
  • To compare TENS with placebo stimulation in patients undergoing posterolateral thoracotomy.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial involving 87 patients undergoing standard posterolateral thoracotomy.
  • Intervention group received TENS; control group received placebo stimulation.
  • Pain assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) on postoperative days 0, 1, and 2.

Main Results:

  • TENS group demonstrated significantly lower mean pain scores on postoperative days 0, 1, and 2 (p < 0.001).
  • No statistically significant differences were observed in demographic characteristics or duration of hospitalization between groups.
  • Early complications and surgical techniques showed no significant differences between the TENS and placebo groups.

Conclusions:

  • TENS is a safe and effective adjunctive therapy for managing acute post-thoracotomy pain.
  • TENS does not appear to influence the duration of hospitalization.
  • TENS did not significantly affect early pulmonary complications after thoracotomy.
