This study optimized biosurfactant production by Bacillus brevis using statistical modeling. The findings reveal optimal conditions for maximizing microbial biosurfactant yield and stability.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Biotechnology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Biosurfactants are microbial surfactants with diverse applications.
- Optimizing microbial production is key to cost-effective biosurfactant generation.
- Bacillus brevis is a potential candidate for biosurfactant synthesis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a statistical model for maximizing biosurfactant productivity.
- To identify optimal culture conditions for biosurfactant production by Bacillus brevis.
- To characterize the properties and potential applications of the produced biosurfactant.
Main Methods:
- Screening of twenty bacterial isolates for biosurfactant production.
- Utilizing hemolytic activity, oil spreading technique, and emulsification index (E24) for screening.
- Employing response surface methodology to optimize production parameters.
Main Results:
- Bacillus brevis identified as the most potent producer.
- Optimal conditions determined: 33°C, pH 8, 10 days, 8.5 g/L glucose.
- Produced biosurfactant (73%) showed foaming, thermal and pH stability, and antimicrobial activity against E. coli.
Conclusions:
- A validated statistical model can effectively maximize biosurfactant production.
- The characterized biosurfactant from Bacillus brevis has potential as an emulsifier.
- Further research can explore broader applications of this microbial biosurfactant.
