Power Factor Correction01:20

Power Factor Correction

The power transmission to a factory involves the transfer of apparent power, a combination of active and reactive power. The power factor measures how effectively electrical power is converted into useful work output. The ratio of the real power (KW) that does the work to the apparent power (KVA) supplied to the circuit.

Area of Science:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Power Electronics

Background:

  • Designing DC-DC converters for space missions requires addressing stringent constraints.
  • The BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BLA) is the first European space laser altimeter, necessitating specialized power solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the key design considerations for DC-DC converters in space instruments.
  • To detail the design flow and component selection for the BepiColombo mission's power converter module.

Main Methods:

  • Discussed topology, technology, input filters, transformer design, and peripheral components.
  • Addressed grounding, regulation (load and line), and secondary protection circuitry.
  • Presented component selection trade-offs and design trade-offs.

Main Results:

  • The design process considered printed circuit board occupation, mass, efficiency, and environmental survivability.
  • Testing confirmed that inrush current, regulated output start-up, and switching functions meet requirements.

Conclusions:

  • The developed DC-DC converter design is fully compliant with the stringent requirements for the BepiColombo mission.
  • The paper provides a comprehensive guide to designing space-grade DC-DC converters.
