Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Background:

Parental support is crucial for the habilitation and rehabilitation of children using cochlear implant (CI) devices.
Understanding realistic parental expectations is vital for successful CI outcomes.
This study investigates parental expectations for children with CIs.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess parents' expectations regarding their children's outcomes after cochlear implantation.
To explore parental views on communication, social, and academic development in children with CIs.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire with 15 Hindi-translated questions was administered to 23 parents of children with CIs.
Questions covered communication abilities, social skills, academic achievement, future life changes, rehabilitation needs, and family stress.
A 5-point rating scale was used to evaluate responses.

Main Results:

High expectations were reported for telephone use (95%), sound detection (99%), listening in crowds (86%), and understanding speech (76%).
Parents expect children with CIs to make friends with hearing peers (90%) and achieve high academic standards (80%).
70% of parents reported family stress, despite 78% acknowledging the need for intensive training.

Conclusions:

Parents generally hold high expectations for their children's development and integration after cochlear implantation.
Despite positive outlooks, significant family stress exists, highlighting the need for comprehensive support.
The findings underscore the importance of aligning parental expectations with realistic outcomes and support systems.
