Glutamate levels in the brain

Background:

  • Investigating maturational changes in glutamate (Glu) in the human cerebral cortex.
  • Utilizing 3.0-Tesla proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) for in vivo Glu quantification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine age-related differences in cerebral cortical glutamate levels from childhood to young adulthood.
  • To quantify the Glu-to-creatine (Glu/Cr) and N-acetylaspartate-to-creatine (NAA/Cr) ratios in different age groups.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 11 children (4-13 years) and 11 young adults (18-33 years).
  • Single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PRESS) was performed on the frontal and occipital cortices.
  • Quantified Glu/Cr and NAA/Cr ratios.

  • Significantly lower Glu/Cr was observed in young adults compared to children in both frontal and occipital cortices.
  • No significant difference in NAA/Cr between the age groups.

Conclusions:
