Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function and cognitive abilities improve as blepharospasm (BSP) symptoms remit. This study shows OFC function is linked to motor and cognitive symptoms in BSP patients.

Background:

  • Blepharospasm (BSP) is a focal dystonia characterized by involuntary muscle contractions in the eyelids.
  • Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) dysfunction has been implicated in various neurological disorders, but its role in BSP, particularly concerning symptom stages, remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function, assessed via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), improves with blepharospasm (BSP) symptom remission.
  • To explore the relationship between OFC function, cognitive performance (verbal fluency), and symptom severity in BSP patients.

  • Nineteen BSP patients and 9 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited.
