Background:
- Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is an exceptionally rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy.
- Accurate staging is critical for effective treatment planning in BPDCN patients.
Observation:
- A 34-year-old male patient diagnosed with BPDCN underwent staging using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (FDG PET/CT).
- The imaging procedure was performed to assess the extent of the disease.
Findings:
- FDG PET/CT demonstrated multiple, mildly hypermetabolic cutaneous lesions on the chest and back.
- The scan also revealed involvement of the left inguinal lymph node.
- A significantly hypermetabolic subcutaneous mass was identified in the left lower leg.
Implications:
- FDG PET/CT imaging is a valuable tool for staging rare hematologic malignancies like BPDCN.
- This imaging modality can detect cutaneous and nodal involvement, as well as deep soft tissue masses.
- Comprehensive staging through FDG PET/CT aids in treatment strategy development and patient management.
