Computer navigation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) accurately guides prosthesis positioning. This study confirms navigation system data strongly correlates with computed tomography (CT) scans, aiding surgeons in achieving optimal limb alignment.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • Accurate limb alignment is crucial for successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • The efficacy of computer-navigated TKA in improving clinical outcomes remains debated.
  • Preoperative and postoperative imaging modalities are essential for assessing TKA accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare limb and prosthesis alignment in TKA using computer navigation versus computed tomography (CT) scans.
  • To validate the accuracy of the Orthopilot navigation system against CT-based measurements.
  • To evaluate the role of navigation systems in achieving optimal TKA alignment.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 70 TKAs was conducted.
  • Limb and prosthesis alignments were assessed using the Orthopilot navigation system (Aesculap®).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pre- and postoperative CT scans analyzed with Traumacad® software served as the reference standard.
  • Main Results:

    • A statistically significant positive correlation (P=0.00001, r=0.874) was observed between navigation system data and CT scan measurements.
    • Mean femoral and tibial cuts demonstrated acceptable alignment with the navigation system's guidance.
    • The navigation system demonstrated its ability to assist surgeons in achieving good prosthesis alignment.

    Conclusions:

    • The Orthopilot navigation system is accurate and shows strong correlation with preoperative and postoperative CT scans.
    • Computer navigation assists surgeons in achieving precise limb alignment and optimal prosthesis cutting planes during TKA.
    • Navigation-assisted TKA offers a reliable method for improving surgical accuracy and patient outcomes.
