Interventions to boost physical activity (PA) in rural adults showed no overall effect. However, studies using objective PA measures found positive results, unlike those relying on self-reports.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Exercise Science
  • Rural Health

Background:

  • Rural populations exhibit higher rates of physical inactivity, overweight, and obesity compared to urban counterparts.
  • Effective strategies to promote physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behavior (SB) in rural adults are urgently needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review evidence on the effectiveness of interventions designed to increase PA and/or decrease SB among rural adults.
  • To identify factors influencing the success of these health interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases was conducted for controlled trials focusing on PA or SB interventions.
  • Meta-analysis and meta-regression were employed, including 13 studies for qualitative synthesis (n=4,848) and 12 for meta-analysis (n=4,820).

Main Results:

  • The overall meta-analysis revealed no significant effect of interventions on PA (SMD 0.11) or SB (SMD 0.07).
  • Subgroup analysis indicated that interventions using objective PA measures showed a positive effect (SMD 0.65), whereas those using self-reported measures did not (SMD 0.00).

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence suggests a lack of effective interventions to significantly increase PA or decrease SB in rural adults.
  • Future research should prioritize objective PA measurement tools and address the critical knowledge gap regarding SB reduction strategies for this demographic.
