Summary

Carotid artery kinking is linked to white matter lesions (WMLs). This study found carotid artery kinking to be an independent risk factor for WMLs, suggesting a significant correlation.

Background:

  • White matter lesions (WMLs) are associated with various neurological conditions.
  • Cervical artery kinking, a condition affecting blood flow to the brain, has been an area of interest in relation to cerebrovascular health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between cervical artery kinking and the presence and severity of WMLs.
  • To determine if carotid artery or vertebral artery kinking is a risk factor for WMLs.

Main Methods:

  • 147 patients underwent MRI for WML assessment and CTA for cervical artery kinking evaluation.
  • Logistic regression and Dunnett's method were employed to analyze the correlation between kinking and WMLs.
  • Severity of WMLs and extent/location of kinking were quantified.
