Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a high-fidelity simulation training program on nurse interns' knowledge and confidence.
  • To assess the effectiveness of simulation in a cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU) internship.
  • To determine the correlation between objective learning, subjective confidence, and perceived simulation effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • Ten nurse interns participated in a simulation scenario focused on common CTICU postoperative complications.
  • Knowledge and confidence were measured using pre/post-tests and a self-efficacy scale.
  • A simulation effectiveness tool assessed participant perceptions of the training program.

Main Results:

  • Mean knowledge scores significantly improved post-simulation (48.18% to 60.9%, P < 0.05).
  • Mean confidence scores significantly increased post-simulation (20.8 to 25.9, P < 0.05).
  • No significant correlation was found between objective learning and subjective confidence assessments.

  • High-fidelity simulation training effectively enhances both knowledge and confidence in new graduate nurses.
  • Objective assessment methods are essential to validate learning gains from simulation.
  • Increased confidence following simulation does not necessarily reflect improved clinical competence.
