Precipitation Gravimetry01:03

Precipitation Gravimetry

Precipitation gravimetry is based on converting an analyte into a sparingly soluble precipitate, which is separated by filtration and weighed. An ideal precipitate should be pure, insoluble, of known composition, and easily filtered from the reaction mixture.
In determining nickel by gravimetric analysis, a precipitant of ethanolic dimethylglyoxime is added to a hot nickel salt solution. This is quickly followed by the dropwise addition of dilute ammonia solution until precipitation occurs. A...

Area of Science:

  • Atmospheric Chemistry
  • Environmental Monitoring
  • Remote Sensing

Background:

  • Dry particulate nitrate (NO3-) deposition monitoring in China is sparse, limiting understanding of spatial and temporal variations.
  • Accurate assessment of NO3- deposition is crucial for environmental management and policy development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To expand ground-level nitrate concentration measurements to a national scale in China.
  • To estimate regional dry nitrate deposition using satellite and model-derived data.
  • To provide a basis for assessing pollution status in areas lacking ground measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) NO2 columns and NO2 profiles from the MOZART-4 model to derive ground-level NO2 concentrations.
  • Inferred ground-level NO3- concentrations from derived NO2 concentrations using established relationships from the Chinese Nationwide Nitrogen Deposition Monitoring Network (NNDMN).
  • Employed an inferred model to estimate regional dry NO3- depositions across China.

Main Results:

  • Successfully expanded NO2 and NO3- concentration data to a national scale.
  • Provided regional estimates of dry nitrate deposition for China.
  • Identified areas with significant dry nitrate deposition, including those without prior ground monitoring.

Conclusions:

  • The developed method effectively estimates dry nitrate deposition over China, overcoming limitations of sparse ground measurements.
  • The findings support the assessment of pollution magnitude and status in data-scarce regions.
  • This study provides valuable data for future environmental monitoring network planning and policy decisions.
