Summary

Nebivolol, a beta-blocker, may cause lichenoid hyperpigmentation, a rare skin discoloration. This side effect emerged after 3 months of use and resolved upon discontinuation, suggesting a link to therapeutic nebivolol doses.

Background:

  • Cutaneous hyperpigmentation is a known side effect of various medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, beta-blockers, and tetracyclines.
  • However, skin discoloration specifically linked to nebivolol has not been previously reported in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A case of lichenoid type cutaneous hyperpigmentation is presented in a 46-year-old female patient.
  • The skin discoloration appeared three months after the patient began taking nebivolol.
  • The hyperpigmentation resolved completely after the cessation of nebivolol use.

Findings:

  • The observed lichenoid hyperpigmentation is concluded to be a result of therapeutic doses of nebivolol.
  • This case represents the first documented instance of nebivolol-induced skin discoloration.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the known side effect profile of nebivolol.
  • Clinicians should consider nebivolol as a potential cause of drug-induced hyperpigmentation in patients presenting with similar symptoms.
  • Further research may be warranted to understand the mechanism of nebivolol-induced cutaneous hyperpigmentation.
