Area of Science:
- General Surgery
- Hernia Surgery
- Gastrointestinal Surgery
Background:
- Amyand hernia (AH) involves the appendix vermiformis within an inguinal hernia sac.
- AH is exceptionally rare in female patients.
- This case presented with an unusual initial symptom of an abdominal wall abscess.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of Amyand hernia in a woman.
- To discuss the diagnostic and management challenges of AH presenting atypically.
- To emphasize the importance of timely surgical intervention for favorable outcomes.
Main Methods:
- A case study of a 60-year-old woman with a perforated appendix in a right inguinal hernia.
- Surgical management included standard open appendectomy and hernia repair.
- Post-operative recovery was uneventful.
Main Results:
- The patient presented with an abdominal wall abscess, a rare initial manifestation of AH.
- Successful surgical treatment of perforated appendix within the hernia sac was achieved.
- The patient experienced an uncomplicated post-operative course.
Conclusions:
- Amyand hernia requires a high index of suspicion, especially with atypical presentations like abdominal wall abscess.
- Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are crucial for managing AH.
- Standard appendectomy and hernia repair, tailored to any associated pathology, form the cornerstone of management.
