The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

7.0K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.

Effective communication among healthcare professionals during hand-off reporting is essential to delivering safe and continuous patient care. Common professional interactions include reports to healthcare team members, hand-off, and transfer reports. Nurses routinely report information to other healthcare team members and also urgently contact healthcare providers to report changes in patient status.
Standardized methods of communication have been developed to ensure that information is...

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Patient Safety Research

Background:

  • Multiprofessional residents in health require robust patient safety knowledge.
  • Assessing this knowledge is crucial for improving healthcare quality and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current level of patient safety knowledge among multiprofessional residents in health.
  • Identify specific areas of strength and weakness in their understanding of patient safety principles.

Main Methods:

  • A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with 78 graduate health residents at a public university in Paraná, Brazil.
  • Participants completed a nine-item questionnaire on patient safety, with data analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Main Results:

  • Nearly half of the patient safety questions (5 out of 9) were answered correctly by the residents.
  • High scores were observed for hand hygiene (98.8%) and the National Patient Safety Program goals (92.3%).
  • Patient identification was the poorest performing area (37.7%), with only Nursing residents meeting the 75% correct answer benchmark.

Conclusions:

  • The overall patient safety knowledge among multiprofessional residents is borderline.
  • Targeted educational interventions are needed to address knowledge gaps, particularly in patient identification.
