Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare cycling duration, exercise intensity, and time spent in moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) between E-bikes and conventional bicycles.
  • To analyze these differences across varied topographies (hilly vs. flat) during cycling commutes.

Main Methods:

  • Eight adults completed 32 outdoor cycling commutes on both E-bikes and conventional bicycles.
  • Journeys were undertaken on both a hilly and a flat route.
  • Data collected included duration, elevation, oxygen consumption (VO2), and maximal cardiorespiratory fitness.

Main Results:

  • E-bike cycling resulted in shorter durations and lower exercise intensity compared to conventional bicycles on both routes.
  • Despite lower intensity, most time (92-99%) was spent in MVPA for both modes.
  • E-bike use led to 17-26% fewer minutes in MVPA and 15-35% fewer minutes in vigorous-intensity physical activity.

Conclusions:

  • E-bikes reduce trip duration and exercise intensity but maintain substantial MVPA during commutes.
  • Switching from car commuting to E-bike commuting can significantly increase physical activity levels.
  • E-bikes are a viable option for increasing physical activity in daily commutes.
