Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Social Psychology

Background:

  • Current personality disorder diagnoses face validity and reliability questions.
  • Reconceptualization of personality pathology is proposed in emerging models.
  • Interpersonal functioning is central to understanding personality pathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate construct and discriminant validity of personality disorder diagnoses.
  • Examine associations between personality disorders and interpersonal functioning.
  • Assess functioning across diverse relationship domains.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative synthesis of 127 studies (2,579 effect sizes).
  • Conducted 120 meta-analyses using random-effects model.
  • Utilized interpersonal circumplex model for functioning assessment.

Main Results:

  • Each personality disorder demonstrated a unique interpersonal style linked to symptomatic dysfunction.
  • Specific relationship domains and association strengths varied by disorder.
  • Results support validity of current personality disorder diagnoses.

Conclusions:

  • Disturbances in self and interpersonal functioning are core to personality pathology.
  • Current personality disorder diagnoses show construct and discriminant validity.
  • Evidence does not support pervasive interpersonal dysfunction across all situations.
