Background:

  • Ocular surface diseases in children can be challenging to manage.
  • Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) is a regenerative medicine approach utilizing the therapeutic properties of the amniotic membrane.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the indications and outcomes of AMT in pediatric patients.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of AMT for various ocular conditions in children.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for patients under 18 who underwent AMT.
  • Data collected between January 2003 and September 2015 at a single institution.
  • Clinical endpoint defined by resolution of ocular condition, no further surgery, and no active disease.

Main Results:

  • 48 pediatric patients' records were analyzed.
  • 32 patients (67%) had AMT for Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS), with 94% achieving the clinical endpoint.
  • 16 patients (33%) received AMT for other conditions (e.g., corneal defects, ulcers, post-strabismus surgery scarring), with 80% reaching the endpoint.
  • No adverse effects related to AMT were reported in any patient.

Conclusions:

  • Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) demonstrated successful outcomes in pediatric ocular disease treatment.
  • AMT was utilized effectively and without complications in this pediatric cohort.
  • The study supports AMT as a safe and beneficial therapeutic option for pediatric eye conditions.
