Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a phytocannabinoid that primarily interacts with the CB1 receptor, a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) predominantly in and around the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and emetic center. Summary

Chronic cannabis use can cause rare peripheral vascular disease, cannabis arteritis, in young adults. This case highlights the need for physicians to consider cannabis use in young patients with rapidly progressing arteritis.

Background:

  • Cannabis is the most frequently used psychoactive substance among young people.
  • Chronic cannabis consumption is linked to cannabis arteritis, a rare peripheral vascular disease.
  • Cannabis arteritis primarily affects young adults, particularly males.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman with a history of long-term cannabis and tobacco use presented with digital necrosis in her left hand.
  • Doppler ultrasound of the upper limbs was normal.
  • Toxicological analysis confirmed cannabis presence in biological fluid and hair.

Findings:

  • Despite medical interventions including cessation of substance use and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, amputation of necrotic tissue was necessary.
  • This case demonstrates that prolonged cannabis use is a potential risk factor for arteritis in young adults.

Implications:

  • Physicians should consider cannabis use history in young adults presenting with rapidly progressive arteritis.
  • Hair analysis can be a valuable tool for confirming chronic drug consumption in clinical settings.
