Area of Science:

  • Craniofacial morphology analysis
  • Medical imaging technology
  • Anthropometry

Background:

  • Three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging is increasingly used in clinical settings for craniofacial morphology.
  • These scanners offer advantages over 2D photographs and computed tomography (CT) by avoiding ionizing radiation.
  • Validating 3D scanner accuracy against traditional anthropometric methods is crucial for clinical adoption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare standard anthropometric cranial measurements with those obtained from 3D surface scanners.
  • To evaluate the repeatability and accuracy of two different 3D scanners (M4D scan and Structure Sensor).
  • To assess the correlation between direct measurements and 3D scan data for head circumference, cephalic index, and head volume.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen adult volunteers were scanned using M4D scan and Structure Sensor devices.
  • Head circumference and cephalic index were measured directly and from 3D scans.
  • Head volume was compared against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a gold standard.

Main Results:

  • Both 3D scanners demonstrated excellent intra-rater repeatability (ICC > 0.99).
  • Direct and digital measurements showed strong correlations for head circumference, cephalic index, and head volume (r between 0.85-0.91).
  • The M4D scan exhibited higher accuracy compared to direct measurements; both scanners provided reproducible data.

Conclusions:

  • Both evaluated 3D surface scanners are reliable for reproducible craniofacial measurements.
  • 3D scanner data strongly correlates with traditional anthropometric measurements.
  • While accurate, caution is advised when interpreting absolute values from 3D scans.
