Summary

Black tea compresses can stain the cornea if the corneal epithelium is damaged, causing discoloration. Avoid applying black tea to eyes with epithelial defects to prevent this harmful side effect.

Background:

  • Warm compresses are frequently recommended for ocular surface disorders.
  • Black tea compresses are a common home remedy, but lack scientific evidence supporting their efficacy and may cause adverse effects.

Observation:

  • This study investigated a case of corneal discoloration from black tea compresses.
  • The prevalence of hot tea compress use was assessed.
  • An in vitro analysis of tea's effect on porcine corneas was conducted.

Findings:

  • Black tea compresses caused brown discoloration in porcine corneas with epithelial defects, but not in those with intact epithelia.
  • No discoloration was observed with water or chamomile tea compresses.
  • Approximately 50% of surveyed patients reported using tea compresses.

Implications:

  • A healthy corneal epithelium acts as a barrier against tea-induced discoloration.
  • Direct application of black tea (Camellia sinensis) to compromised corneas should be avoided.
  • This research highlights potential risks associated with common home remedies for eye conditions.
