Parkinson's Disease: Treatment

1.3K
Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), involve the gradual and irreversible destruction of neurons in particular brain areas. These disorders exhibit standard features like proteinopathies, selective vulnerability of some neurons, and an interaction of intrinsic properties, genetics, and environmental influences in neural injury.
Parkinson's Disease is primarily a result of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The cornerstone of...

Neural Regulation

Digestion begins with a cephalic phase that prepares the digestive system to receive food. When our brain processes visual or olfactory information about food, it triggers impulses in the cranial nerves innervating the salivary glands and stomach to prepare for food.

Parkinson's Disease: Overview

2.2K
Neurodegenerative disorders are progressive diseases that cause irreversible damage and loss to neurons in specific brain areas. Examples of these disorders include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These disorders share characteristics such as proteinopathies, selective neuronal vulnerability, and a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The primary therapeutic goal for these conditions is...

Summary

Genetic variants in the TMEM230 gene were investigated for their link to Parkinson disease (PD). This study found no association between TMEM230 variants and Parkinson disease in European datasets.

Area of Science:

  • Neurogenetics
  • Molecular Neurology

Background:

  • Familial Parkinson disease (PD) has been linked to genetic factors.
  • Previous research identified four variants in the TMEM230 gene associated with PD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association of TMEM230 gene variants with Parkinson disease.
  • To validate the role of TMEM230 in PD in independent European cohorts.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of TMEM230 gene region in two independent American European datasets.
  • Statistical assessment of variant association with PD diagnosis and age at onset.
  • Correlation analysis with cerebrospinal fluid α-synuclein levels.

Main Results:

  • No variants within the TMEM230 gene region were found to be significantly associated with Parkinson disease.
  • No association was observed between TMEM230 variants and age at onset for PD.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid α-synuclein levels did not correlate with TMEM230 variants.

Conclusions:

  • The TMEM230 gene variants previously implicated in familial Parkinson disease were not associated with PD in the studied European populations.
  • These findings suggest TMEM230 may not be a common causative or risk gene for Parkinson disease in these cohorts.
  • Further research is needed to fully elucidate the genetic architecture of Parkinson disease.
