The indirect motor or extrapyramidal pathways originate in the brainstem, the lower portion of the brain that connects it to the spinal cord. Background:

  • Obesity negatively influences children's motor development and postural control.
  • Limited research exists on infant weight's impact on gross motor skills, especially postural control during sitting onset.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare postural control strategies between normal-weight and overweight infants at sitting onset and one month later.
  • To identify differences in motor behavior related to infant weight status.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 29 infants (19 normal weight, 10 overweight) and measured weight/length at 3 months.
  • Assessed infant center of pressure (COP) using a force platform at sitting onset and one month post-onset.
  • Analyzed data using linear (RMS, sway path) and nonlinear (Sample Entropy) measures of postural control.

Main Results:

  • Overweight infants showed greater medial-lateral RMS and reduced sway path compared to normal-weight infants.
  • Overweight infants increased Sample Entropy from sitting onset to one month later, while normal-weight infants decreased it.

Conclusions:

  • Overweight infants adopt altered postural control strategies compared to normal-weight peers.
  • These altered strategies may impede early developmental exploration.
  • Further longitudinal research is needed to track developmental trajectories.
